How to get ready for your free measure-up

A measure-up is the first step for every job we do. We come to your home, measure the space and talk through what you would like. It costs nothing, and a bit of preparation means the price you get back matches what you actually want.

Clear the space

We need to measure wall to wall and floor to ceiling, and look into the corners. Move anything stacked against the walls where the piece will go, and take down pictures or shelves if you can. If there is a cupboard or wardrobe you want to replace, empty enough of it that we can see the walls behind.

Think about what you will keep in it

This matters more than anything else. A wardrobe for long coats and dresses is laid out differently from one for shirts and folded jumpers. Pantry shelves for tins are spaced differently from shelves for big pans. Make a rough list:

  • What is going in it, and roughly how much
  • Anything tall, deep or heavy, like a vacuum cleaner, a record collection or a printer
  • What you want hidden behind doors, and what you want on show

Gather a few pictures

Photos of furniture you like, screenshots or a page torn from a magazine all help. They tell us more about the style you are after than a description can. Note the details you like: the door style, the handles, the colour of the timber.

Know what is in the walls

Tell us about sockets, light switches, radiators, pipes and anything you know is buried in the wall. If you are planning other work in the room, such as new flooring, rewiring or plastering, let us know too, because the order things are done in matters.

Flooring first or joinery first?

For fitted cupboards and wardrobes it is usually better to have new flooring down first, so the units sit on the finished floor. For doors, new carpet or flooring often means the door needs trimming, so it helps to know what is going down.

Have a budget in mind

You do not have to share it, but knowing roughly what you want to spend helps us suggest the right materials and layout. There is often more than one way to get the look you want.

After the visit

We send you a written price for the work. If you are happy and want to go ahead, you can secure your start date with a deposit on our booking page.

Alcove cupboards: what affects the price

No two alcove units cost the same, because no two alcoves are the same. Here is what makes the difference to the price, so you know what to ask for.
